What is Instrumentation Technology?

Students in instrumentation technology programs learn to install, calibrate, repair and maintain advanced analytical equipment used in engineering and scientific research.

These programs prepare graduates for entry-level work or a bachelor's degree program in instrumentation technology for a specific industry. Courses provide instruction in mathematics, electronics, pneumatics and the operation of equipment, including voltage meters, current meters and electronic probes.

Instrumentation technicians often work alongside engineers in manufacturing and industrial environments, such as chemical and pharmaceutical plants, oil and gas refineries, and food processing plants. Possible instrumentation career options include electrical drafter or designer, calibration technician, petroleum laboratory technician or microwave test technician.
